Geocaching! getting started...

So.. you've read my post about geocaching...

you would like to know more...

ready further...

I stumbled across Geocaching back in 2005 and thought it interesting but didn't have a GPS at the time! now I realise.. you don't really NEED a GPS... but never-the-less...

A public holiday was dawning upon me and I figured that I'd like to take my seriously HOT girlfriend out and about and do something different! I had just recently aqcuired a really awesome phone... C702! and it has GPS on board.

I remembered about geocaching and looked it up.. signed up and went out the next day (the public holiday) to go find our very first cache! needless to say, I had NO IDEA what I was even looking for.

The closest cache that I could find(with my limited knowledge) was panorama medi-clinic hospital in Cape Town(GC1TMQ3)... so off we set.. two adventurers not knowing where we'd end up. We arrived at the place... I checked on Google maps as I didn't have geocaching software on my phone yet and got to the location and started searching... and searching... and well... not knowing what to look for, didn't really help! we were looking in the tree... around the tree... practically under the tree... all that it said was that it was a micro cache! (whateva the hell that meant! ;)

FORTUNATELY!!!! as we were about to leave the location I spotted a lady moving closer to the location and also started looking in and around the tree... I carefully aproached and asked if she knew about geocaching...

It turned out that we met Battlerat and Pussycat! Two experienced and seriously friendly geocachers that thought they'd quickly do this "simple" cache! and they explained the ropes to us and what a micro cache, a nano cache, TB's (aka traceable bugs), FTF (first to find), event cache's etc... etc... etc... Battlerat and Pussycat had already found over 800 cahces and have done so all over the world!

Micro cache example...

Micro caches are magnetic.. so watch out.. they can be stuck onto anything metallic and are very small therefore not easily noticeable. Open them up... write your geocache username down and wala... you've logged your find. Go onto www.geocaching.com and log your find! add a little story and upload a pic for your friends to see! (if you so inclined)

Traceable Bug example...

Traceable Bugs are cool. They travel all over the WORLD! They have different names and get up to all sorts of mischief! They traceable so if you find one... take it... log that you've taken it and hide it into another place and then sit back and watch how ppl find it and move them around!

Traditional Cache Example...

Traditional caches are as they say... traditional. Tin, or palstic container that has a few arbitrary item in them. The rules are simple!
If you take anything out... replace with equal or higher value! Log your find and place back in the original spot! clean up the area around (if it's dirty) and you've managed to do your bit of good while getting out and enjoying the view or scenery that is associated with traditional caches.

Well, needless to say we got into geocaching and really really enjoying it! We did our first event cache two weekends back and it was a really awesome experience! the pic can be found here...

Happy Caching!
